Forsyth Receives More than $2.9 Million for Lab and Clinical Research Expansion

NIH Provides Construction Grant for Institute’s New Home

March 1, 2010

The Forsyth Institute has received an award of $2,987,253 from the National Institutes of Health to renovate laboratory, clinical research and support space at its new facility in Cambridge, Mass. This award will provide funds to create a new interdisciplinary research center of excellence: the Center for Discovery at the Host-Biofilm Interface, which examines how humans co-exist with microbial passengers.

The Center for Discovery at the Host-Biofilm Interface will build upon Forsyth’s internationally renowned research programs in microbiology, molecular genetics, microbial informatics and immunology.  In conjunction with this project, Forsyth is beginning an aggressive multi-year recruitment campaign, and will hire eight new principal investigators.

Dr. Philip Stashenko, President and CEO of The Forsyth Institute said, “This construction grant from NIH continues the tremendous support that Forsyth has received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  We are thrilled to receive this critical funding for our new home during our centennial year. In a time when many organizations are cutting back, we are able to step up our efforts to recruit leading scientists.”  The project is estimated to create between 47 and 59 new jobs, including construction employment and long term research personnel.

In July of 2009, Forsyth signed an agreement with Equity Office, Inc. for the long-term lease of a research facility located at 245 First Street in Cambridge, Mass. The oral health research institute will be relocating to its new headquarters in the fall of 2010. Forsyth is leasing 73,317 rentable square feet to accommodate its new home, which will include state-of-the-art laboratories, a new research clinic, meeting spaces and administrative offices.

The project described was supported by Award Number C06RR028742 from the National Center For Research Resources.
