Equity in STEM Education

ADA Forsyth Student Scholars opens doors to careers in STEM for underserved high school students. Created in 1993, the summer internship program allows students to work side-by-side in the laboratory with world-renowned scientists engaged in cutting-edge research.

“The goals of the Student Scholars program are to teach students what scientific research involves, and to allow students to perform hands-on scientific research.”

Improving Equity in STEM

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) are underrepresented in STEM careers that impact their communities. While Latinx, Black, and Indigenous people make up 18.9%, 13.6%, and 2% of the population respectively they only make up 5.9%, 3.8%, and 0.2% of the dentistry workforce. We hope to change those discrepancies like these by opening a door to the sciences to high school students who might not get the opportunity otherwise.

High School Summer Internship

The Student Scholars program is an eight-week internship for Massachusetts high school students. Forsyth’s world-class scientists serve as mentors to the students throughout the summer. Interns learn basic laboratory techniques by participating in mentors’ research projects in a productive and enriching scientific environment. At the end of the program, students present the findings from their own research project.

Due to ADA Forsyth’s upcoming relocation at the end of 2024, ADA Forsyth Student Scholars will be Scholars postponed until 2025.

The ADA Forsyth Institute will move to a new building in Somerville at the end of 2024. We have recently determined that this transition time will impact the Student Scholars student experience too much, such that it is not fair to potential students to host them at ADA Forsyth this summer. Thus, we have made the decision to postpone 2024 Student Scholars activities until 2025.

We are excited to welcome high school students in the 2025 Cohort to our new building, with state-of-the-art labs, brand new laboratory equipment, dental clinics and cutting-edge techniques, with training by our world-renowned scientists, researchers, oral and public health professionals. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during this transition time for ADA Forsyth.
