Genomic and transcriptomic profiling of Corynebacterium species in the human nasal passages
The nasal microbiome plays critical roles in human health and disease. Non-diphtheriae Corynebacterium species are common members of the nasal microbiome in healthy people. The overarching purpose of this project is to identify molecular mechanisms by which Corynebacterium species can shape microbiome composition and function using a meta-omics approach. For example, in vitro experiments from the lab indicate some Corynebacterium species produce lipases digesting host lipids to antimicrobial free fatty acids which could diminish colonization by pathogens, e.g., Streptococcus pneumoniae.
