Gurkan Goktug, DMD, DDS, CAGS

Dr. Gurkan Goktug received his DDS degree from Hacettepe University School of Dental Medicine in 1992 in Turkey. He began his postdoctoral training in prosthodontics in 1998, and received his certificate of advanced graduate study in 2001 from Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Immediately after graduation, he was hired as a clinical instructor in the Department of Restorative Sciences and Biomaterials, Division of Postdoctoral Prosthodontics. He was appointed as course director of the Basic Prosthodontics Techniques course in 2002, and has remained director of this course for the last 12 years. Dr. Goktug received his DMD degree in 2008 from Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine.  He was promoted to clinical assistant professor in 2006 and in 2010, he was promoted to assistant professor. He received the Residents’ Award for Teaching Excellence in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dr. Goktug has been actively teaching continuing dental education courses for 12 years.  He has lectured nationally and internationally. He has been practicing dentistry, limited to prosthodontics, at 2 different facilities, and teaches postdoctoral prosthodontics at the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine. He has published in peer-reviewed professional dental journals.

Dr. Goktug is a prosthodontist specializing in complex esthetic cases and full-mouth rehabilitation, including full porcelain crowns, porcelain veneers, and full porcelain inlays and onlays; single crowns and bridges, full-mouth fixed partial dentures, complete dentures; implant-supported crowns, bridges, and over dentures. When he is not practicing dentistry he enjoys cooking, skiing, traveling and spending time with his family. 

Gülsün Gül, DDS, MBA, MPH, MSc, CAGS

After graduating from Hacettepe University School of Dental Medicine with a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree in Turkey in 1992, Dr. Gül continued her academic and professional career in Boston.  She received her MBA degree from Suffolk Sawyer School of Management (1997), an MPH degree from Tufts Medical School (2004), a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS) in Pediatric Dentistry (2010) and a MSc Degree in Pediatric Dentistry (2012) from Tufts Dental School.

During her professional career over two decades, Dr. Gül has held responsibilities as Operations Manager and Executive Level Manager at Integrated Health Care Systems in Turkey (Bayindir Health Care Systems, 1993-97); she was Project Consultant to Irem Therapy Center Project, Mother Children education foundation, Turkey (ACEV, 2000), and to Health Care City Dental Clinic Project, Dubai  (2005). She was the Course Director in Epidemiology and Public Health, for undergraduate and post graduate dental students, at Tufts Dental School (2003-2008).  During her academic career, she co-founded the DOTS (Dental Outreach to Survivors) Program with a grant from Delta Dental MA to provide free and confidential dental care for 400 mothers and children who were living in transitional houses. As a part of this program, she developed training programs in recognition and guidance of domestic violence for medical and dental professionals. Based on the success of this program, Dr Gül was appointed as one of the prestigious Faculty Fellows of the Jonathan Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts University in 2006, and in 2009 she was awarded the Richard Allard Award by the Massachusetts Dental Society for her contributions to increase awareness of abuse and neglect of children, as well as domestic violence.  In addition to her other responsibilities, Dr Gül enjoyed being a part of a dental mission group who serves Zambian orphanages (Options for Children in Zambia) and other children in 2006.

As a pediatric dentist and public health specialist, Dr. Gül strongly believes in prevention of dental disease by giving parents and care-givers the right tools from the beginning of life. She works very closely with her patients and their care-givers, as well as with women’s groups and expectant mothers, to make sure they receive the best customized individual care they can get as their precious ones grow.

Dr. Gül enjoys traveling, skiing, music, painting, and lives with her husband Jeff and their two sons.

Xiaozhe Han, DMD, PhD
General Dentistry

Dr. Han graduated from Boston University School of Dental Medicine and is currently Assistant Member of the Staff at the Forsyth Institute. In addition to being part of the Forsyth Faculty Practice, he also enjoys teaching at Harvard and Boston University, and doing research in his own lab.

Hatice Hasturk, DDS, PhD, CAGS, Diplomate, American Board of Periodontology

Dr. Hatice Hasturk received her DDS from School of Dentistry at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey in 1988. She completed her PhD and periodontology specialty training at the same institution in 1995. After working for four years as a private periodontist in Istanbul, she started working at the Clinical Research Center at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine as a research fellow in 1999. Dr. Hasturk received a Certificate in Advanced Graduate Study in periodontology from GSDM in 2004. She joined the Forsyth Institute in 2010 and is an Associate Member of Staff, Department of Applied Oral Sciences and the Director, Center for Clinical and Translational Research.

As a dentist and specialist (periodontist), Dr. Hasturk’s work mainly involves the oral cavity, but she is interested in much more than just improving dental care. She is working to understand the link between oral diseases and how they can affect the rest of the body.  Specifically, Dr. Hasturk focuses on diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions that share a common inflammatory pathway with periodontal disease.

Dr. Hasturk is a board-certified periodontist and has authored or coauthored more than 50 scientific publications in peer-reviewed dental and medical journals.


Alpdogan Kantarci, DDS, PhD, CAGS, Diplomate, American Board of Periodontology

Dr. Kantarci is an Associate Member of the Staff at the Forsyth Institute in Cambridge, MA, USA, works as a Faculty Member at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine, and serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Boston University Henry Goldman School of Dental Medicine. He has started his career as dentist after graduating from Istanbul University in 1991. He completed his clinical and PhD studies at Istanbul University at the Department of Periodontology joining the faculty. He moved to the USA in 1999 as a postdoctoral fellow at Boston University. Upon completing his postdoctoral studies in 2002, he has started clinical periodontology training at Boston University. After graduating, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in 2004 at the Henry Goldman School of Medicine. He was promoted to the Associate Professorship in 2009. In 2010, he joined the Forsyth Institute maintaining his adjunct faculty position at Boston University.

During his academic career, Dr. Kantarci has been actively involved in training, education and patient care. He has mentored more than 30 PhD, doctorate, and Master’s theses; directed and taught in several graduate and postgraduate clinical and didactic dentistry courses. He serves in the editorial board and as a reviewer of 15 dental and medical scientific journals. He is the recipient of numerous federal, international and industry-supported research grants and holds several patents. He has published more than 85 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, wrote book chapters, and has presented more than 170 oral talks and posters in dental and medical congresses.

His passion is the translation of scientific knowledge to patient care. Through this, Dr. Kantarci believes that health can be improved, lost tissues due to disease can be restored and success can be maintained over long-term. He is an active cyclist, loves traveling and exploring.


Corneliu Sima, DMD, DSc, MSc, Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology

Dr. Corneliu Sima received his DMD degree from University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj,
Faculty of Dental Medicine in Romania in 2006. He started his career as clinician scientist after
completing his Doctor of Science degree in Oral Biology at Boston University Henry M.
Goldman School of Dental Medicine in Dr. Thomas E. Van Dyke’s laboratory in 2010. His work focused on novel Ω-3 fatty acids derived therapeutics in diabetes. He completed two
externships in oral surgery at Boston Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Boston in
2009-2010. He moved to Toronto, Canada as post-doctoral fellow in Dr. Michael Glogauer’s
laboratory at Matrix Dynamics Group, University of Toronto where he worked on leukocyte
biology and inflammation resolution in periodontitis and diabetes. He completed his Master of Science and clinical training in Periodontology at University of Toronto in 2014 and joined the Forsyth Institute in 2015 as a clinician scientist.

His clinical focus is on microsurgical approaches to gingival grafting, implant site development
and on clinical research related to immune modulatory therapeutics. Dr. Sima is actively
engaged in translational research at The Forsyth Institute/ Harvard Catalyst bridging the gap
between bench and bedside by conducting studies on pathogenesis of periodontitis and
diabetes and therapeutic means to modulate de-regulated inflammatory responses to
subgingival biofilms.

Dr. Sima is passionate about travelling, bicycling, hiking and photography. His favorite topics
are science/philosophy and environmental protection.

Mary Tavares, DMD, MPH
General Dentistry / Dental Public Health / Prevention

Dr. Tavares is a 1977 graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.  After completing a General Practice Residency at Tufts/New England Medical Center, she went on to obtain a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health and obtained a certificate in Dental Public Health from Boston University.  She has practiced dentistry alongside her academic career since 1980.  Currently, her research looks into the connection between systemic and oral health, with a particular focus on obesity and diabetes.  She has developed a healthy weight intervention for children to be used in dental offices.  Dr. Tavares is also the director of the Advanced Graduate Education Program in Dental Public Health at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Tavares was part of a Forsyth team that collaborated with Kuwait to set up a state of the art dental care delivery system for children in the 1980’s.  She still travels to Kuwait as an advisor with this program.

A resident of Cambridge, she enjoys all forms of gastronomy, traveling, yoga and film.

Hend Alqaderi, BDS, MFD (RCSI), DMSc
General Dentistry

Dr. Hend Alqaderi gained her Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree from the Faculty of Dentistry in Alexandria University, Egypt. She then completed an Advanced General Dentistry Fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeon in Ireland in 2008.

In 2016 she gained a Doctoral Degree in Medical Science and a Certificate in Dental Public Health from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, USA. In addition to being part of Forsyth Faculty Associates, Dr. Alqaderi is currently a lecturer and a part-time faculty at the Department of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Alqaderi has a decade of experience in advanced general dentistry and was a head and a clinical supervisor of a 10-dental-chair clinic at the School Oral Health Program in Kuwait between 2008-20012. Dr. Alqaderi’s research focuses on the relation between oral health and systemic health.
