– Volunteers needed for a dental study
The Forsyth Institute Clinical Research Center in collaboration with ForsythKids Program is looking for children ages 10-14 years to take part in a clinical study testing an investigational toothpaste for prevention of tooth decay in children.
(Duration of study participation: 1 year and 5 visits are required)
Where: The Forsyth Institute Center for Clinical and Translational Research, 245 First Street, 17th Floor, Cambridge MA
What will happen at the first visit? We will:
- Review your child’s medical and dental history
- Examine your child’s teeth, gums and mouth
- The screening exam will last 15-20 minutes
If your child is found eligible and willing to participate, your child:
- Will be enrolled and randomized (by chance) into one of the study groups.
- Will receive the assigned study products (toothpaste and toothbrush) with instructions of use. Your child will be seen every 3 months up to 12 months for repeated exams.
- The Study visits will take about 30-45 minutes.
- Total of $400 compensation will be provided to those who complete all 5 visits.
- Forsyth Clinic and clinicians are following the recommended COVID-19 safety measures including but not limited to using appropriate PPE during patient exams

– Orthodontic study
Healthy volunteers between the ages of 16-65 years receiving orthodontic treatment with fixed braces and with gingivitis (red and bleeding gums) are invited to participate in a 3-month dental research study to test a new approach in reducing gum inflammation and dental plaque.
The study requires a screening visit to determine if you qualify.
What will happen at the study screening visit? We will:
- Review your medical and dental history
- Examine your teeth, gums and mouth
- Measure the level of gum redness and bleeding
Once you qualify and agree to participate in the study:
- You will come to the clinic five times until the end of the 3 months for assessments and treatments
- $575 compensation will be provided to those who complete the study

– Diabetes study
The Forsyth Institute invites you to participate in a dental study for individuals with diabetes and dental problems.
You may qualify if you are:
- Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes with an HbA1c level of above 7.5%
- Between the ages of 35-80 years old
- With body mass index (BMI) of 30 and above
- NON-SMOKER
- With or without gum disease, who would need a surgical treatment of gums or teeth before a dental restoration
The study requires a non-compensated screening visit to determine the status of your gums and teeth to see if you will qualify.
Once you qualify and agree to participate in the study, you will come in for a single study visit:
- Blood and gum tissue samples during routine gum treatment will be collected
- $50 stipend will be provided to compensate your time, and you will be assessed to determine whether you need gum treatment or surgery

– Gum disease study
Have you ever been told you have gum disease, or do you think you have gum disease?
A new dental study is inviting volunteers (18 years and older) with gum disease or red and bleeding gums to participate in a 3-month study to test a new (investigational) product to treat gum disease and improve gum health.
The study requires a screening visit to determine if you qualify.
What will happen at the study screening visit? We will:
- Review your medical and dental history
- Examine your teeth, gums and mouth
- Collect blood for routine laboratory testing
Once you qualify and agree to participate in the study:
- A full mouth deep cleaning will be provided free as part of the study
- Total of 4 visits will require for assessments to complete the study.
- A total of $400 will be given as payment if you complete the study.
