Why invest in oral health innovation? Learn the motivation behind Forsyth dentech 2021

On September 23, oral health innovation thought leaders from around the globe will gather at The Forsyth Institute and virtually to mobilize a new generation of technology in dentistry. The oral health technology development sector represents a $100 billion+ untapped market with great potential to improve patient health and increase access to cutting-edge care. Forsyth dentech 2021 is the leading conference and investment forum for this burgeoning market, convening stakeholders from industry, academia, government, venture capital, and more to move novel ideas into the marketplace.

Dr. Wenyuan Shi, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer of The Forsyth Institute and mastermind behind Forsyth dentech 2021, explains the motivation behind this inaugural conference and what attendees can expect to gain from the experience.

Why is Forsyth the right organization to convene an oral health innovation conference? How does dentech align with Forsyth’s mission?

Forsyth has been at the center of oral health innovation for more than 100 years and is the home of many impactful dental discoveries. For example, in the early 1900s Forsyth scientists proved that cavities are an infection and identified the specific bacterium that causes dental decay, as well as the bacterial complex that causes gum disease. Since then, our researchers have made countless advances in the field of oral health. A major part of Forsyth’s mission as an institute is to “accelerate the delivery of wellness solutions locally and globally.” We take this task seriously and it is the foundation of everything we do.

Forsyth dentech 2021 is a convening force to bring key players in the oral health innovation space together to collaborate and form new connections. Unlike the other dental schools at universities across the country, Forsyth is an independent institution, and our mission extends beyond purely education. We regularly interact with academic institutions, industry, government, and other stakeholders through our Center for Clinical and Translational Research, our Office of Technology Development, and other programs. We also have a global footprint and strong brand recognition in countries around the world who have leveraged our approach to dentistry to revolutionize dental care for their patient populations. All these characteristics make Forsyth the natural convener for dentech.

What are Forsyth’s goals for the conference? What do you ultimately want to see come out of Forsyth dentech 2021?

The inaugural Forsyth dentech conference is one of many first steps toward the ultimate goal of creating a networking club and ecosystem that brings investors and innovators together. We want to serve as the convener for these stakeholders to begin collaborating more significantly.

When did you realize there was a need for a conference like dentech? How long has this vision been incubating?

Ever since I started building my first biotech company 20 years ago, I have wished for there to be a mechanism in place to streamline innovation and technology development in oral health. But I believe this dream existed long before I got involved. In many conversations over the past two decades, I’ve heard others express that dentistry gets left out of the investment and innovation space. With Forsyth dentech 2021, we believe we can begin to change that.
